Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management President Addresses the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) supporting global calls for ‘Responsible Communication’.

On November 14, 2024, in Jakarta, Indonesia, Professor Justin Green, President & CEO of Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, addressed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) representatives on the need for global collaboration on "Responsible Communication." This follows his address to the United Nations on July 24, 2024, where he supported global calls to establish "Responsible Communication" as the new 18th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - which brings together Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam aims to accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavours in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian Nations.

To advance this vision, Professor Green outlined a collaborative framework focused on multi-stakeholder partnerships, policy development, capacity building, technological innovation, and consistent monitoring.

The meeting was attended by Nararya S. Soeprapto, ASEAN Deputy Secretary General for Community and Corporate Affairs; Marisol Candy Hernandez, MA, FAPR, ASEAN Assistant Director of Community Relations; Destya L. Pahnael, ASEAN Senior Officer of Community Relations , Mateus Furlanetto, Chief Administrative Officer of Global Alliance and Alexander Mamby Aruan, director of ASEAN Public Relations Network (APRN).

Core Principles of Responsible Communication

Professor Green emphasized key tenets of responsible communication, including:

1. Open Dialogue on global issues like climate change, poverty, and democracy.

2. Freedom of Opinion and Press to support transparency.

3. Fact-based and Ethical Communication within organizations.

4. Counteracting Misinformation and Propaganda to uphold integrity.

5. Education on Responsible Use of Communication Platforms, particularly on social media.

6. Support for Accountable Journalism in both public and private sectors.

7. Promotion of Diversity, Inclusion, and Gender Equality.

8. Empathy Towards Marginalized Groups, including those affected by poverty, war, and discrimination.

9. Use of Positive and Inclusive Language to foster understanding.

The call for a responsible communication reinforces the Global Alliance’s commitment to ethical, inclusive, and effective communication as a cornerstone for addressing global challenges.
